Been a busy week or two here in badhairland. First, there was the Jambalaya and gumbo cookoff. I didn't eat any (not too keen on shellfish!) but I did go for moral support. My roommate won third place! He got a nifty ladle and an apron with space chickens on it.

Tuesday was Mardi Gras. No, I didn't find the little baby in my king cake. But I did find some beads with rubber duckies on them. Needless to say I had to snag one for the roommate and myself.

Mardi Gras? More like Moron Gras π |
Only after looking at the photo do I realize how dorky I looked. I didn't take the tags off til I got home. Still, the duckies squeak and I think roomie liked his. The photo was taken in Deedwoords. I went down to watch the parade thingy they do every year, but then I got a text there was new mead... screw the parade, it's mead time π
The day after that, the roomie went on vacay. So I've had the house to myself pretty much. It's too quiet TBH.
In other news, I also inherited a plant.
I shall name him Fenster Fern. |
It was originally intended for someone else; but they let me take it home to "make it grow bigger and have babies", a mission I will gladly attempt. My phone tells me it's a bird nest fern. I typically avoid ferns as they usually need more humidity than what a normal house can provide. I currently have it enclosed in a plastic container, sort of an improvised terrarium for now. We'll see how that works.
The Mug Club party also happened. The mugs are numbered on the bottom and folks drew a wooden coin out of a bag to see what mug they'd get. You got to keep the coin. If you kept your old mug (I E kept the same number) you still got to keep the coin. Here's mine.

The new mugs are similar, except they don't have handles on 'em. This is so they can fit better on the shelf. I prefers one with a handle though... knowing my luck I'd drop a handleless one. The wooden coins were made by a friend, who has one of those laser engraver things. We keep telling him he needs an Etsy store.
And then, of course, there is the Room™. My friend came up last weekend for the mug party and helped to paint the downstairs room. We started out on this stuff:

I will tell you this stuff was not worth what I paid for it. It didn't cover what I needed it to (mudded over nailholes, guidelines, etc). After nearly half the can we stepped back and looked at the *half a wall* we'd painted and decided it looked even worse than before we'd tried to paint it.
By this point my friend wasn't feeling so hot so we knocked off for the day. After he went home I went and got a gallon of Killz (that crap covers everything!) and the stepladder from the brewery and finished painting by myself. I have to admit it looks better than I thought it would; bearing in mind I've never tried to paint a room by myself, so it was a learning experience.
Of course, being me, I got paint everywhere, including myself.

No, seriously.

This was expected; I wore old clothes and didn't wear shoes. I still have paint on the bottoms of my feet. It will wear off eventually I suppose.
A quick trip to Yellow Star later, and we have everything we need to make the room livable: a dresser and a bookcase, both of which I put together. The bookcase was pretty easy; I could put those things together in the dark--It's 5 pieces, two shelves and a back to nail on. The dresser wasn't too bad, at least until I got to putting the handles on. The "drawers" were fabric and the holes were almost too small in the plastic handles for the tiny screws (that didn't have a point on them BTW). I think it took longer to put the handles on than to put the main part together. Nonetheless, after much swearing and shouting I managed to get them attached.
Today was carpet day. I had managed to snag a big piece of carpeting to fill some holes. The floor is concrete down there so some extra insulation was necessary.
I honestly don't know how you folks do it, those that do this kind of thing professionally. Carpeting was a surprisingly big pain in the ass. But I finally got everything put in place.
I also found a few other things, such as a purple area rug.
And here's the big reveal!
So we're pretty much set for the youngin to come stay with us. I'm counting down the days!
Stay tuned!
Aye,
Kraneia
